M.O.B. meeting minutes – March 13, 2011

Meeting called to order by President Ryan just after 4…. 21 people present + 2 kids – good turnout!

Old Business:

Peoria Beerfest – Dave M will be sending our information to the Jaycees by Mar. 24, so we need beer names by then so they will be in the program.  We have 8 beers slated to go…. Yay, us!

"Hungry Enthusiast" dinner – first one was in February.  There were 4 guests, none of whom were present to tell us what they thought.  But Becky said it was yummy and they enjoyed hosting it.  Next one coming next weekend, Mar. 20

New Business:

Big Brew is coming – will be Saturday, May 7.  More details will be discussed next month, but then we will decide location and what kind of beer we will make – Shaun suggested maybe doing a partial mash brew?  Bring ideas to next meeting.

Becky reported on Dave's competition success (She kinda likes to brag about that, you know….)  He earned a third place at Drunk Monk, a HUGE Chicago competition for his "Love Potion" Cherry Baltic Porter.  That same beer also won a 1st place in Denver at the Dredhops Competiton (put on by Papazian's homebrew club) and a 1st at the IBU competition in Des Moines.  Also, his Marzen placed 2nd at IBU and his Doppelbock won 3rd in Denver.  Yay, Dave!  He was given a round of applause from the Mobsters present.

In our Blarney Challenge in–club competition, we had several Irish Ales's and Dry Stouts to choose from.  The results were very close:

3rd place – Lisa's Irish Ale

2nd place – Kermit's Misty Harp

1st place – Dave's Irish Red

Beer School:  This month being close to St. Patty's Day, our beer school was about Scottish & Irish beers.  We sampled Belhaven's Scottish (sadly, a bit lightstruck and skunky…), Belhaven's Wee Heavy, Smithwick's, Boulevard Irish Red, and Dave's and Lisa's Irish Reds, too.  Next month:  the four kinds of Bock.

Who Brought What:

Shaun – Cascadian IPA

Dave – Parti Gyle (low ABV mild or light stout made from 2nd runnings of a bigger beer), 5 "mystery beers" leftover from IBU competition (no labels or markings), Irish Red

Jeff S. – his famous Chocolate Stout (his announcement that he brought it was followed by lots of murmured "mmmmmm" noises)

Rick – Citrus Wheat

Jacob – Begian Wit – his first beer so he's a "made guy" in the MOB!

Matt – Boulevard's Long Strange Tripel (Smokestack Series)

Rocky – Nebraska Brewing's Farrel's Ale, Apple Wine

Kermit – Misty Harp, Stone Russian Imperial Stout

Lenny – Irish Red

Lisa – Irish Ale

Thanks also for the food:

Becky – Artichoke Dip with Crackers

Amy – Reuben Dip

Lisa – Irish Cheese
