M.O.B. meeting minutes – January 9, 2011

Meeting called to order around 4…. Shaun Ryan was leading it as President for the first time….15 ½ people present – good turnout!

Old Business:

Not much was mentioned…..  Dave and Becky reminded folks of the first "Hungry Enthusiast" beer dinner coming up February 20 @ 3:00.  They also announced the March date:  March 20.  Menu details will be coming next month.

In–club competitions for this year were announced by Shaun.  Here is the plan:

March – Irish/Scotch Ales

June – Hop–a–polooza (hoppy beers)

Aug – "Lawnmower" beers (think light and refreshing on a hot day)

Sept – Wines and Meads

Oct – German beers

Nov – Belgian beers

Dec – Fireside Challenge (think strong, sit–by–the–fire and contemplate life kind of beers…)

New Business:

Dues were paid by all members present.  $12 per person for the year (cheap!).  If you missed the January meeting, catch up with Becky at the February one.  You don't want to be left off the email loop and miss out on any of the MOB happenings!

Congrats were given to John and Lisa J. for becoming grandparents in December.  Welcome, little Ada Roberts!

Peoria International Beer Festival has been announced as happening on April 30 this year.  Bring beer ideas to the February meeting.

We went around the room discussing our "Brew" Year's Resolutions.  Looking forward to supporting each other in pursuing these!  And yes, folks, here they are in WRITING so we can remind you of them later.  :–)

Jim – wants to go to partial mash process this year

Alan – wants to try brewing a beer this year

Aaron – plans to build a "brew tree" system and go to all–grain process

Lenny – wants to increase quantity and quality of beer he makes this year and wants to try to make a heat exchanger/re–circulator for mash

Molly – wants to try brewing

Bob – wants to start kegging, brew more, and buy less

Dabe – wants to play with water treatments and pursue economy by harvesting/reusing yeast

Becky – wants to brew more

Kermit – wants to brew more, too – aiming for 100 gallons

Bobbie Jo – may want to try brewing

Amy – will look into a beer making class at SCC.

Shaun announced that we finally got our Beer Judge Certification Program test results.  Our club now has FOUR official beer judges.  Congrats to Kermit, Shaun, Dave and Becky.  They were given a round of applause.

Lisa announced that her big 5–0 is coming up, and she also wished Dave a happy B, too (Their birthdays are on the same day, January 12)  It is hoped everybody will be raising a glass of something good on that day.

Beer School:  We learned all about strong stouts this month:  Foreign Extra, American, and Russian Imperial Stouts.  We had seven varieties to sample:  Guinness Foreign Extra, Lion Stout, Dave's "Grey Tiger" Stout, Avery Out of Bounds Stout, Sam Adams Imperial Stout, North Coast Old Rasputin, Dave's "Independence Stout".  Most were yummy – rich and roasty –  and it was interesting to compare the differences in these various stouts.  Next month, we'll learn about the rest of the stout family with dry, oatmeal, and sweet stouts.

Who Brought What:

Lenny – Oatmeal stout (will be part of beer school next month, too)

Lisa – English mild, saison, English amber, American pale

Bob – Schlafly Christmas Ale

Alan – "Perverted Pear" and St. Vincent's wine and New Belgium 1554

Kermit – Mounted Brood (beer with Mt. Dew in it), Misty Harp (beer with Irish Mist in it), a mystery beer (turned out to be his yummy braggot), a mix of O'Fallon beers, and a chocolate cherry stout.
